The Raven King – Maggie Stiefvater Review

Hey bookies! I’m so excited to be bringing you my review of Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven King.

So this book continues pretty much right after Blue Lily, Lily Blue. Its the home stretch people! Piper Greenmantle has awoken a demon and for now it seems to be following her orders but it is an “undower” which means that it slowly starts to kill Cabeswater and all things created by it. Gansey is forced to make a difficult decision, Ronan and Adam learn about what they really want and Blue discovers a piece of herself.

Maggie’s way of writing is very unique. She always leaves me questioning things and it always feels eerie, but I love that about her. The characters and the world is fantastic.

[SPOILERS] okay so let’s get down to it. I flew through the first half of this book really quickly because I was hyped up for it and I needed to know what was going to happen. When I got to the half way point I began to wonder how things were going to go down and it wasn’t until the end that I realized there are so many strings left untied.

Things I liked :

1. I appreciated Adam’s character a lot more in this book because he is sure of who he is and what he wants. I always liked Blue and Gansey so that didn’t change. Ronan was also very interesting because of his character development. I love the line in chapter 6 when he makes jokes about Blue getting suspended. I would love to read more about Ronan and Blue because I feel like he’s the one she interacts with the least but their chemistry is the most interesting.

2. THE SHIP. I knew that Ronan and Adam were endgame since (almost) the beginning! I’m so happy that they confessed to each other. Oh and obviously Gansey and Blue, they were obvious though.

3. Laumonier. Oh my goodness! I laughed so hard when I read chapter 10. How Maggie wrote that was brilliant; it makes me wonder if she was under the influence 😅

Things I didn’t like:

The ending. I knew that Glendower was going to be dead. I was hoping that he wouldn’t be but it was too good to be true. From that point on the book fell flat. I was so ready to give it 5 stars but then I was left with so many questions:

1. Does Laumonier 2+3 get revenge on The Gray Man for killing Laumonier 1 ?

2. Does The Gray Man return to Maura ? Does he start working with Henry’s mom?

3. What happened with Matthew? He didn’t actually die right ?

4. Does Blue’s father just stay in his tree from now on ? Does he even live with them anymore ?

5. Does Blue’s kiss continue to provide death to Gansey ?

6. Where did the demon go ? It took 4 books to wake him up and a 5 minute fight to defeat him ?

7. Now that Cabeswater gave up himself to bring Gansey back to life and he has pieces of Cabeswater in him, does that mean Adam is the hands and eyes of some part of Gansey ?

8. Where did Gwenlilian go ?

9. What exactly happened with Noah ? Was he trying to tell us that he’s the one that whispered those things to Gansey when he died the first time ? Or was that just him passing on finally? And how come the gang didn’t get to say goodbye to him ? That’s not fair.

Lastly, I don’t understand Henry Cheng’s character. I understand that his mother is a magical artifact seller/buyer and that the Robobee is important but I don’t understand the importance of him as a character that joins the group at the last minute and becomes so attached to the main characters. I don’t feel the necessity of him joining the picture.

These unanswered questions do not mean that I do not like the book! I want to know the answers so badly that I can’t ignore the fact that I care that much, which means that I really like the book. I just wished there was a little more.  [SPOILERS]

So overall, I really enjoyed this book. I love Maggie Stiefvater’s writing style, the plot is totally unique and the characters are well developed. I wish the ending could have been more dramatic and climactic but I definitely recommend this series to anyone who wants something different.

4 / 5 stars

Sincerely,

B ❤

The Hamilton Book Tag!

Hey bookies, I think everyone knows what Hamilton is by now. If not, it’s a musical written by Lin-Manuel Miranda about one of American’s founding father: Alexander Hamilton. The music is A+ and the play is very educational; since we are not American and knew nothing about this before listening to the musical. Anyways, here is our rendition of The Hamilton Book Tag!

DISCLAIMER : Contains Spoilers for the Harry Potter Series and the Hunger Games Series

The Room Where It Happens
A book world you would put yourself into

Bia:TheRavenCycle.pngWouldn’t it be so cool to live in this world? The characters are all so great and unique that I would love to be friends with them. Also, the magic and eeriness of this world is fascinating!

Cass:

HARRYPOTTER2.jpg

Who wouldn’t want to be a witch or wizard studying at the infamous Hogwarts? I would just like to ride Buckbeak around all day, study with Dumbledore and read all the books in the Library!

The Schuyler Sisters
An Underrated Female Character

Bia:The Testing

More people have to read this book! It is so good and Cia Vale is a really smart, determined main character that deserves more credit.

Cass:

The Gathering.jpg

I think people just need to pick up a Kelley Armstrong book ASAP, because her characters are so diverse and so easy to adore! The Gathering is set in the same world as The Darkest Powers and each character gives an important essence to the story, plus Maya Delaney is just a character you’ll automatically love. She’s badass, intuitive and spoiler she’s a freakin’ shapeshifter!

My Shot
A Character that goes after what they want and doesn’t let anything stop them

Bia:

Moira is so badass and she does not let anything get in the way of doing what’s right or protecting her sister and even if you can’t relate to her stubbornness and/or brashness, you will definitely admire her loyalty.

Cass:

Throne of galss.jpg

There’s too much I can say that’ll definitely express how badass Celaena is in the Throne of Glass Series. She always strives to protect the ones she loves and doesn’t let anyone or anything get in the way of her mission. She’s witty and cunning and handles a sword better than any assassin I’ve read about. She to a “T” the sassiest, strongest and loyal character I’ve ever read.

Burn
The most heartbreaking end to a relationship you’ve ever read

Bia:A Walk to Remember

Nicholas Sparks… WHY?! I cried forever after this… No Spoilers but… I mean, if you know Sparks than you probably have an idea.

Cass:sirius

Nothing in this world can express how saddened, broken and defeated I felt when these two went their separate ways. I don’t care if this is the hugest spoiler to ever happen but really, Rowling? I was an absolute wreck after reading this scene.

You’ll Be Back
The Sassiest Villain

Bia:
The Hunger GamessPresident Snow

You may not be thinking about President Snow as sassy… but damn, he is. He put everyone back in the Hunger Games JUST CAUSE. He LAUGHED when Katniss shot Coin. I mean thats’s pretty sassy.

Cass:The Lunar Chronicles Queen levana.jpg

Queen Levana…. Need I say more? Whether you have a murderous bone in your body, you will wish this character death and her sassy mouth doesn’t help much either.

The Reynolds Pamphlet
A book with a twist you didn’t see coming

Bia:
Divergent

I’ll be honest, I did not see that coming. I had a feeling someone would… but not her. Veronica Roth got spunk, I’ll give her that.

Cass:

Lady MIdnight.jpg

SPOILERS SPOILERS SO MUCH SPOILERS!!!! If you’ve read LM by Cass Clare you’ll know what I’m talking about but forreals?! Those last 10 pages… grr.

Non-Stop
A book series you marathoned

Bia:annalolaisla

Love these books! Each one is unique and super cute. I read Anna in one sitting and picked up the other two right away!

Cass:

LUNAR.jpg

How quickly I binged this series, I was a bit hesitation going into this series but boy was I wrong! Read all four books in the series as well as the prequel/ collection of short stories in a week’s time.

Satisfied
A book with multiple point of views

Bia:14. salt to the sea

I’ll just keep mentioning this book until everyone in the world has read it…

Cass:

Throne of GlaSSS.jpg

The multiple POV’s of this series really makes you attach yourself to each and every one of the characters. Sarah J Maas kicks ass at kicking ass!

Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story
A book/series you believe will be remembered throughout history

Bia:Twilight

Whether you were the person who:

  1. Hated the series but never read it
  2. Loved the series but never read it
  3. Hated the series and have read it
  4. Loved the series and have read it
  5. Hated the series but secretly loved it
  6. Or Loved the series but secretly hated it

You have to admit that EVERYONE knows about Twilight. It’s what started Young Adult for a lot of readers today.

Cass:

Lord of the rings.jpg

I’m a tad biased with this choice, mostly because this series changed my life and really got me hooked on the high fantasy lifestyle. Whether you watched the films, read the series or just wish deep down you were a hobbit you have heard of Lord of the Rings. It will forever be the high fantasy that brought together a multi million franchise, and it will follow me till the end of time.

Stay Alive
A character you wish you could bring back to life

Bia+Cass:Harry Potter

I feel like I need to create a list for… well okay, here we go:

  1. Sirius Black
  2. Severus Snape
  3. Hedwig (I mean really Rowling!?)
  4. Dobby
  5. Fred Weasley
  6. Albus Dumbledore
  7. Cedric Diggory
  8. Alastor Moody
  9. Remus Lupin
  10. Nymphadora Tonks
  11. AND SO MANY OTHERS including (but not limited to) Dean Thomas’s father and Neville Longbottom’s parents and Luna Lovegood’s mom

And that’s all for The Hamilton Book Tag! It was lots of fun, and anyone who wants to do it, consider yourself tagged! (:

Sincerely,

B + C ❤

April Progress Report

Hey Bookies!

So, I thought I would let you guys know how the readings been going… or in my case, NOT going. It’s not that I don’t want to read, and I’m not in a slump, I just don’t have any time. Exams are here and stress is on overdrive.

I am slowly making my way through: KELLEY.jpg and it’s really good! I’ve missed these characters, especially Moira and Gavril.

In other news! Cass and I have taken up the ultimate task that we each have wanted to do for a VERY long time and so we decided to do it together: write a book!

It’s super early and still in its development stage but just as a teaser, here’s our working tagline:

“This is a story about survival. A story about struggle, freedom and strife, but most importantly, this is a story about family. For family is not determined by the blood flowing within your veins, but by the love beating within your heart.”

I know its super vague and doesn’t tell you anything, but like I said, it’s still really early and we’ve only just gotten started. I’m hoping to keep you guys updated on how we’re progressing.

I hope your reading month is going better than mine. Let us know what you guys are currently reading in the comments!

Sincerely,

B ❤
