Book to Movie Adaptations

Hey bookies! Last week we talked about some of my favourite book to T.V. show adaptations so this week I thought it was only fair to discuss some of the best book to movie adaptations! I decided to omit classics because almost all of them have been made into a movie at one time or another and there are multiple versions of them. I’m strictly going to mention modern books today. Also, I didn’t realize this until I created the list but they are all series… Well, let’s get started.

1. The Hunger Games Trilogy  –  Suzanne Collins

Hunger Games.jpgThe Hunger Games trilogy was the hottest series at the time of its release and in my opinion, is one of the best book to movie adaptations of the times. In case you have been living under a rock for the best 10 years, the hunger games is a dystopian young adult trilogy that focuses on a teenager named Katniss.

the hunger games.jpegYou guys remember what this is about right? Well just in case:
The world has been separated into 13 districts with each one being responsible for a different economic resource. Every year, the children between the age of 12-18 get their names put into a raffle and a boy and a girl from each district to play in the Hunger Games; a tournament of survival where the last person standing wins enough money to feed their family for the next generation.

They brought this book to life so well that I was as excited to watch the movies as I was reading the books. I have yet to watch an adaptation as good as this, especially Catching Fire.

2. Harry Potter Series  –  J.K. Rowling

Harry-potter-films.pngI don’t think its possible that harry potter to not be on this list. This series has gotten to the point where it is so filled with nostalgic feelings that most people don’t even think about when adding it to their favourites list. While growing up, it was such a prominent part of my life and that includes the movies as well.

I really don’t need to give you a summary of the series, do I…? No? Phew, I was worried for a second there.

I think after the third movie, the films started to change a lot of more but that is probably due to the lengths of books increasing with each sequel. Even then, I think that these movies were very well done and left a lasting impression on anyone who watched them. As with The Hunger Games, my favourite movie and book are the same: Prisoner of Azkaban.

3. Twilight Series – Stephanie Meyer

Twilight. Ah, remember those good old days? You were either a diehard fan and showed that off loud and proud or you were a fan who was kind of embarrassed for liking something so cheesy… either way, you were a fan right?

Twilight took the world by storm and really started the 21st-century craze for vampires. It paved the way for success for the shows that followed it like The Vampire Diaries and True Blood.

It follows a normal girl named Bella when she moves in with her dad in a small town which unbeknownst to its residents, is harbouring vampires. Edward and his family are trying to live as normal a life as possible, keeping low and out of sight until Bella attracts Edward’s attention. A love story ensues with drama and trauma. My favourite of the four books and five films is Eclipse.

4. Divergent – Veronica Roth

divergentDivergent was one of those series that had so much potential to be great. The books were riveting and the concept at the time was new and exciting. When they announced that they were going to make this series into a movie, I was really excited, I thought maybe this could be a new Hunger Games. Unfortunately, it didn’t live up to it… except for the first movie.

Divergent follows a teenage girl in a futuristic dystopian type world where everyone is separated into factions based on the results of a simulation test when they turn sixteen. Of course, you are allowed divergent movieto choose a faction of your own if you believe the own chosen for you doesn’t match your persona, however, if you should fail the initiation tests, you will be exiled from all factions and live in poverty amongst the factionless. Our main character finds herself in Dauntless, the faction for the daring and brave at heart, and it’s there that she falls in love and learns that there might be something fishier going on than she thought.

I think the first movie was done really well and honoured the book. When Insurgent came out I was very disappointed, they changed so much from the second book and I’m not the only one who agrees. The third movie didn’t even make it to theatres! That being said, I still think the first movie was so good that I had to include it on the list.

5. The Maze Runner Trilogy – James Dashner

maze-runner-booksThis is the most recent series added to my list since the last movie, The Death Cure, just released earlier this year. I am, however, sad to say that I have only read the first book in the series and as a comparison, I can only fully judge The Maze Runner movie.

The Maze Runner is a futuristic, post-Screen Shot 2018-03-28 at 11.02.22 PM.pngapocalyptic dystopian type of book. We follow Thomas and his trials when he suddenly finds himself stuck in a maze with a bunch of other boys without their memory. The next day, a girl appears in the maze as well, something that has never happened before. Together, Thomas, Theresa and the other Gladers, learn that the only way to truly be free of the maze is to find a way through it, but what’s waiting on the other side may be worse than the maze itself.

I think the first movie played homage to the book really well and I was excited to continue watching the movies to see how it all played out. I never continued with the series though so I’d love to know from someone who did if the second and third movie was any good in comparison!

These are really the only movies that I wanted to share as a part of my list but I thought it would be a good idea to share some of my most anticipated book to movie adaptations releasing in 2018!

Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda I actually just watched recently and absolutely loved! Ready Player One comes out TODAY and I can’t wait to see it! We will have to wait a little longer for The Darkest Minds and The Crimes of Grindelwald though. Who else is excited about these movies?

Thank you so much for reading this far! I’ll see you next week, and to anyone who celebrates the ressurection of Christ, Happy Easter! 🐰🐇

Sincerely,

B ❤
